llms.txt

Step oneDescribe the site

1 The format proposal asks for the name first, then a short summary in a quote block, then optional plain paragraphs.

Step twoList your key pages

2 Pick the five to fifteen pages you would most like quoted. Describe each with the fact that matters most: a price, an area, a date. A section named Optional marks pages that can be skipped when space is short.

Step threeFix what is flagged

Nothing to check yet. Fill in the site name and add a page.

3 Checks run as you type: absolute https addresses, repeated addresses, a missing summary, and lines over 200 characters.

    Step fourCopy or download

Your llms.txt upload to the root of your site

    Longer outline optional llms-full.txt

4 Save as UTF-8 text so it loads at your-domain/llms.txt. Open it in a browser to confirm.

    BonusLet the right crawlers in

Tick the kinds of visitor you want to allow. The snippet adds one rule group for each and your sitemap line.

robots.txt snippet add to your existing robots.txt

5 A crawler follows the group that names it, so check that no older rule for the same name still blocks it. Documentation: robots.txt introduction.

    Publish it in three steps

    1. Save the output as llms.txt, encoded as UTF-8.
    2. Upload it to the root of your site so it loads at your-domain/llms.txt.
    3. Open the address in a browser. Come back and rebuild it whenever a key page is added, moved or removed.

Want the reasoning behind each line? llms.txt explained covers the format, how it differs from robots.txt and a sitemap, and what to expect. To see how quotable the pages themselves are, run the 12-point self-check.

    Questions

Do I have to have an llms.txt file?

No. It is an optional plain-text summary of your site. It costs little to keep and gives automated readers a tidy list of your best pages.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The file is built in this page as you type, and your entries stay in it until you close or reload the tab.

What is the longer outline for?

It repeats the same structure with one block per page, ready for you to paste in the full text of each page. Publish it as llms-full.txt if you want a reader to be able to take in your key pages in a single fetch.

Check the rest of the site too.
